This the story of a Bahamian Out Island girl who dared to reach beyond her circumstances and persisted in moving forward, against all odds and the prejudices of mankind, to experiences and successes never imagined. This is the story of how my life unfolded based on three key factors: a difficult personal decision early in life, two important blessings, and my love for my island country. These factors continue to influence my life daily.
At age sixteen, I made an unconditional sacrifice by not completing my high school education in favor of supporting Mama and five of my younger brothers until they were able to support themselves. My strength, confidence, and motivation came from Mama and her blessing before she died, and from the blessing of my mentor and friend Bishop Leonard Hagherty, OSB. The Bahamas, considered Heaven on Earth, is my home. The azure blue waters with their beautiful crystalline reflections and the lush forested areas (known as the bush) were my nurturing grounds and they continue to inspire me and give me inner peace. I tell my story in the hope that others will take heart when times are difficult, trust their dreams, and perhaps, in some small way, be inspired to keep moving forward. I know that I am truly blessed, and oh, so thankful.
